Recently I participated in an event with Privé New England at their Summer Classic: All White Edition at the W Hotel in Boston. Design-wise, this was an interesting challenge for me. Because this event was an All White/ "wear white" themed event, it was requested that my pieces for my collection also adhere to the "wear white" policy. At first I was hesitant, because I had never designed an entire collection in white (or mostly in white), but I decided I was up for the challenge.
I also made the decision that the majority of this collection would use lots of intricate hand-done work, since I felt I hadn't really challenged myself with hand-sewing since I had been in school. I bought a ton of artificial white flowers (mostly for one piece in particular) and a bunch of glass pearl beads.
The story behind the name REVIVAL actually comes from the online class I've been taking (Parsons x Teen Vogue Fashion Industry Essentials). In the first course, the significance of the color white in fashion is discussed. To summarize, you'll often see white come into style at the beginning and end of every century/era/what have you. White often symbolizes rebirth, renewal, revolutions, and REVIVALS. When I heard that while watching class videos, something just clicked with me. I had kind of a designers-block for this collection (as I said earlier, I don't often work in white) and didn't quite know the direction my designs were taking or what to even name the collection. On top of that I was still extremely burnt out after Heavenly Creatures and just felt creatively drained. At that point I had already known I had to be working in all white, but once I heard the word "revival" it just dawned on me. I got myself back into the studio and just spent hours and hours each day working on the 3 new pieces that I would combine with the 2 pieces I showed at Open Runway to create REVIVAL.
Thank you to my all of my models: Samantha, Katie, Lolo, Dani & Christine (especially Samantha for lending some of her time to me when one of my models bailed at the last minute); my amazing hair stylist, Rachelle Araujo; my friend & personal photographer for the night, Emily Bowling; Rae K Francis, Privé New England, and D. iRvin Photography for booking me for this event and providing me with amazing event pictures; and last but not least my mom & two best friends, Dana and Emily for coming and being my personal hype team.
